    Jermain Wesley Loguen began life as a slave February 5, , near Nashville, Tennessee, on a plantation/distillery belonging to David Logue. "Jarm," as he was called on the plantation, was the son of a slave named Cherry (formerly Jane) from Ohio and David Logue, a Tennessee plantation owner. Resistance to the Fugitive Slave Law. In , Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Law, which not only allowed David Logue to come after his former slave but it also required Rev. Jermain Loguen's new friends and neighbors to assist in his capture. However, Rev. Loguen was so popular in Syracus e that the citizens agreed to declare the city a sanctuary from the Law.
